Jan Deckner

Deckner’s exploration of Singapore draws a stark contrast between the individual and the urban environment.  His piece Sleeper reveals the winners and losers that the urban system produces, as a homeless man finds a safe corner on the urban periphery of a shopping strip.  Singapore Flat Wall at first glance seems to be a sterile and dispassionate picture of an apartment block but a closer look reveals details like hanging clothes, lights and perhaps a man sitting in front of his computer.  It reveals the intimate aspects of living so closely together in a densely populated city. The minutia of everyday life continues to forge a space within the confines of steel and concrete.

Jan Deckner studied photography in both Germany at the Fachhochschule Bielefeld University and at RMIT University in Melbourne.  Deckner has exhibited in Germany and was the recipient of the Contrasts in Architecture Award in 2006 for his work Singapore Flat Wall.
